
MATCH REPORT: 7th June Silverdale Prems vs Massey: 22-34
This week we travelled to Massey for the second time this season. Massey kicks off to us long and we clear to touch. Massey win the line out and run down the sideline working a few phases. Our defence is good and play remains midfield. Massey get awarded a penalty and kick to touch giving them some extra metres. Their line out isn’t straight and we get possession before kicking deep and then force Massey to a knock on with good pressure. Our scrum holds but we knock the ball on mid-field. Massey just hold their scrum, run wide and get into our 22 until Matt Renal intercepts and runs down the line, kicks ahead and gathers and throws a pass in-field to Tom Tula to score under the posts. But celebrations are short lived as the touch official calls it back for a knock on at the other end of the field and the try is disallowed. The next few minutes sees Massey with possession but we defend everything they throw at us. They get into our 22 until we turn the ball over and kick deep into their half. They continue to run phases at us and find a hole in our backline and cross for an easy try. Its unconverted. 5-0 to Massey.
We kick off and Massey kick the ball out. We drive from the lineout, then feed it across the field making metres with each phase until we knock the ball on. We get possession back after Massey kick and we get back to halfway. Both teams get a few phases each way. Massey infringe during a ruck inside their half so we go for a penalty kick and Taylor Norwood lands it between the uprights. 5-3 to Massey.
Massey kick off and we get out of our half with a deep kick. Massey run it back at us breaking tackles and splitting our defence until they drop the ball. We kick for touch but the line out is called not straight and Massey quickly work down the field and break a couple of tackles to link and score. It unconverted. 10-3 to Massey.
We kick off deep and Massey kick out to touch. A long throw at the line out is dropped and Massey get a scrum. After a couple of sets we are awarded another penalty and take a shot at goal which is successful from Taylor. 10-6 to Massey.
Massey kick off deep and we return it out wide. After a few phases Massey make a cross field grubber kick which finds the hands of their winger who passes inside to a supporting player and they score a try. This time its converted. 17-6 to Massey.
We kick off and Massey attempt to run it out but our defence is strong and they eventually kick for touch. A good lineout sets a platform for attack and Massey infringe giving us another penalty which Taylor slots again. 17-9 to Massy.
Massey kick deep again and we work the ball out of our half. Massey get caught for offside inside their half so Taylor steps up again in front of the posts which is successful. 17-12 to Massey.
Nearly half time and Massey break some weak tackles and score quickly. Its converted and Massey are ahead 24-12. Play continues, Massey make a high tackle and get a yellow card. Moments later Massey get another yellow card for infringing on the try line. We continue to attack and a cross field kick from Tom Barham to Tom Taula sees us over for a comfortable try. Its unconverted. 24-17 to Massey at half time.
We kick off and intercept the ball from Gannon Moore’s boot and then dive on the ball just short of the line. Almost an early try in the half. The next period sees both teams kick and run multiple phases at each other at mid-field until Matt Renall nails a long touch finder on Masseys 5m line. Massey hold the lineout then kick out. We win our lineout and continue to attack Masseys line. A quick ball wide and Jacob Klingelsmith scores after a good set. Its unconverted. 24-22 to Massey. We are right in it now.
Massey kick off and we kick it out after a couple of phases. Masseys lineout is solid and they throw multiple phases at us around our 22. We hold them out and they end up throwing a forward pass going out wide. We get down field and Massey kick to touch. But our lineout isn’t straight and we give away possession. Massey work their way into our 22. They attack our line and we manage to get the ball back on our line but then fumble and miss a touch down which sees a Massey player come through and apply pressure on the ball to score a try. It converted. 31-22 to Massey.
We kick off and Massey run well into our half by passing wide with an overlap. Massey continue to attack our half and get a 50-22 kick to keep the pressure on. We get awarded a penalty to relieve the pressure. Soon after we are caught for a truck-and-trailer and Massey get possession and continue to attack our line. Our defence is good right across the field and Massey end up taking a penalty goal to stretch the lead 34-22. We kick off and gather the ball and run phases inside Masseys half. We get a lineout inside their 22 and manage to drive the ball at the line but get driven into touch at the corner flag. Massey run it out and we manage to hold them up in a tackle to get the ball back. Massey scrum well and turn the ball over and work down into our half. Our defence is good and we hold them out until they knock-on over the line. Several phases each way sees us to the end of the game. This was a much improved effort from our boys, just unfortunate not to get a win on the day. Our Player of the Day was Taylor Norwood for his in-form goal kicking and keep us in the game.
